Hida Furukawa

Hida Furukawa is a beautiful town of merchants that has the scenery reminiscent of the old days as well as Takayama. Storehouses with white earth and mortar and clear Setogawa River create unique scenery, which is different from Takayama. Besides its townscape Hida Furukawa has attractions such as Honkoji temple whose main hall is the biggest wooden building in Hida region, Shinshuji temple that makes beautiful picture with the vermillion Imamiya Bridge over Araki River and Enkoji temple adjacent to the Setogawa River and Storehouses with white earth and mortar. It is also its appeal that you can wander around the town slowly because it is not so crowded. The attractions concentrate in a narrow range and you can tour around the town in half a day. In addition I highly recommend rich Satoyama (undeveloped woodland near populated area) around Hida Furukawa. You can enjoy cycling and hiking there. It takes only 20 minutes to go to Hida Furukawa from Takayama by train, so when you visit Takayama you should definitely try visiting Hida Furukawa too.

If you stay in Hida Furukawa, I recommend you stay at Yatsusankan. It is a Japanese style inn with a hot spring on the Araki River. View of Hida Furukawa such as the Araki River and Honkoji temple from a room is wonderful. The buildings are very tasteful. Especially Shogeturo was built in 1905 and designated as a registered tangible cultural property of Japan. The food, the hot spring and the hospitality of the staffs are also amazing.

There is Tanekura, a beautiful village surrounded by rich nature 20 minutes ride by train and 10 minutes ride by car from Hida Furukawa. At the village you can feel how the original landscape of Satoyama used to be though there is no sightseeing spot in particular. Tanekura Inn. is managed by SATOYAMA EXPERIENCE and renovated from old Japanese house with 100 years history, which was built with the traditional method of construction in Hida area. It has very nice atmosphere. As for the food vegetarian dishes that contain vegetables in Hida area as their main ingredients are served. They are so delicious.
