Outline

Chichibu Yomatsuri (Chichibu Night Festival) is an annual festival of Chichibu Shrine in Chichibu city, Saitama.
The festival is one of the Japan's three biggest Hikiyama-matsuri (float) festival with Gion Matsuri Festival in Kyoto and Takayama Matsuri Festival in Hida.
It has history of over 300 years.

It is held on every December 2 and 3.
It climaxes from 19:00 at night on December 3 and 6 Dashi (floats) are drawn through the town.
The scenery of Dashi (floats), the highest which is 7 meters tall drawn is simply overwhelming.
The town gets crowded on the day, but the front of Chichibu station is relatively empty and you can see Dashi (floats) passing right before your eyes.

Chichibu Yomatsuri (Chichibu Night Festival) is one of the most wonderful festival in Tokyo Metropolitan Area, so it is well worth going though Chichibu is far from Tokyo; it takes 2 hours from Ikebukuro, Tokyo by train (1 hour and a half by limited express).

The festival has been designated as an significant intangible folk cultural asset and Dashi (floats) as Significant tangible folk cultural asset.

Things to note

- It is cold especially at night, so you need to wear warm clothes.
- It takes about 10 minutes to walk from Seibu-Chichibu Station (Seibu Chichibu line) to Chichibu Station (Chichibu Main Line).
- During the festival the passage of the pedestrian is regulated mainly on the floats’ route so it is difficult to move.
- It is hard to trace the floats. You will watch the floats from a few specific places.
- On the street in the front of Chichibu Station you can see some floats headed to Chichibu Shrine from around 17:30. The area is recommendable because it is relatively empty. You can get a close look at the floats.
- Chichibu Shrine is majestic so I highly recommend it. Note that entry is restricted from 17:30.
