Koishikawa Korakuen Garden


A common feature in autumn in Japan is the autumn leaves. Leaves turn red or yellow in all places in Japan and you can enjoy breathtaking scenery. In Tokyo you can enjoy not only a contrast between historic building such as a Japanese garden, a shrine and a temple but also the scenery of the big city’s own such as a street lined with trees.

The period

In the suburbs of Tokyo the autumn leaves are at their best in November and in central Tokyo from the middle of November to the beginning of December. However the period may vary depending on the actual ambient temperatures during the current year. The predicted period are announced by a government office and private enterprises from September to October every year.

Rikugien Garden

When you see the autumn leaves in Japan, it is impossible to ignore Japanese garden. You can enjoy beautiful harmony between a pond and them. There are some gardens in Tokyo and neighboring areas so by all means go there.

Rikugien Garden, Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, Kiyosumi Garden, Hama Rikyu Garden, Sankeien Garden (Yokohama), etc.

Shrines and temples

Hasedera Temple

Shrines and temples are the places where you can enjoy Japanese own autumn leaves, the same as Japanese garden. There are many shrines and temples in Tokyo but if you have time it is also good to go Kamakura that can be reached in a hour from Tokyo. Kamakura has many shrines and temples and is popular as the scenic spot.

Akasaka Hikawa Shrine, Yasukuni Shrine, Nezu Shrine, Gotokuji Temple, Zojoji Temple, Hasedera Temple (Kamakura), etc.

Streets lined with trees

Meiji Jingu Gaien

If you want to enjoy the autumn leaves in Tokyo as a big city, see them on a street lined with trees. The trees lined in good order are breathtaking. Especially Meiji Jingu Gaien Park’s Ginkgo Avenue is one of the most famous spots in Tokyo.

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

You can enjoy the autumn leaves also in parks in Tokyo. If you forget the noise of the city and stroll in a park developed orderly, you will able to be relaxed.
